Georgia Republican representatives advanced bills aimed at banning the teaching of some racial subjects and increasing the overall rights of parents in schools.

HB 1084, which would prohibit teaching what conservatives call "divisive concepts" on racial matters, was advanced on a vote of 92-63, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. HB 1178, which combines several parental rights that are already law, advanced on a vote of 98-68.

"I don't believe that we need to teach young students that an individual's moral character is based on their race, or that the United States is fundamentally racist, or that an individual bears responsibility for the past actions of others of the same race," Georgia Rep. Will Wade, a Dawsonville Republican, said in a statement.

The items included in HB 1084 were originally part of a 2020 executive order by former President Donald Trump that have since been repealed, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. The concepts banned in the bill are commonly known as critical race theory, which originally alleged that current social structures propagate racism.

Similar legislation moving through the House would authorize parents to be able to request banning material they deem unacceptable from school curricula and bar transgender girls from participating in girls' sports teams, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

The bills are now in the Georgia Senate for further consideration, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.
