Former Atlanta Braves shortstop Julio Lugo died at 45, with family members reporting that his cause of death is assumed to be a heart attack.

While most notably a shortstop for the Boston Red Sox during their 2007 World Series championship, Lugo was a member of seven different MLB teams during his 12-year career, ESPN reported

"He batted .385 in the 2007 World Series sweep of the Colorado Rockies," ESPN reported.

Lugo hit 80 home runs throughout his career and held a .269 batting average with 475 RBIs, ESPN reported. He was generally a light-hitting player, but his batting average and ability to get on base were solid. Lugo played for the Houston Astros, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves.

Lugo's 12 season MLB career extended from 2000 to 2011, ESPN reported. One of Lugo's last public appearances was at a Red Sox alumni game at Fenway Park in 2018, where he hit a home run.
